The fire chief of Oregon, Illinois quickly became a believer in the DSPA-5 when the device knocked down a fire in the basement of a residence in Oregon over the New Years weekend.
Chief Don Heller, who arrived at the fire scene before the first engine company, deployed the DSPA-5a dry sprinkler powder aerosol devicedown a basement stairway. It worked extraordinarily well, Heller said.
Heller said his department had received DSPA5 units from the Illinois Fire Store only days before the fire. They were in his vehicle when he arrived first on the scene of single-story dwelling fire.
After my 360, I discovered the fire was in the basement, he recalled. The chief said he opened a side door leading to the basement, pulled the cord on the DSPA5, lobbed it down the stairs, then closed the door.
He said it was too dark and smoky to see the device work and by now the engine company had arrived. He estimated it was 5 to 7 minutes before the fire crews entered to find that the fire was substantially out.
Heller said and his firefighters reported the basement was much cooler than other similar basement fires and damage to the rest of the residence was confined to only smoke damage on the first floor.
I'd say it was quite a success, Heller said. He said the fire was electrical in nature, apparently caused by a space heater. It turned out that the DSPA5 landed only about six feet from the space heater, he said. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Releasing a cloud of potassium compounds, DSPA supprsses flames and disperses a fire within seconds. This proven fire intervention tool can be used in a wide variety of fire scenarios to lower the temperature and knock down flames allowing the fire department to enter, fight the fire effectively and limit damages and dangers to themselves.
The DSPA can be used in any enclosed area where fire can cause major damage. Different types of first responders have all used DSPA and saved thousands of dollars of property and equipment. Tested and found to be effective on Class A, B, C, and K fires in contained spaces, a single DSPA can completely suppress a fire in a 3,500 cubic foot room and will slow the spread of fire in larger spaces. DSPA can also assist with Class D fires as an agent suppression fires started from the metal.
